The New York Public Transit Association, Inc. (NYPTA) is a not-for-profit association of public transportation service providers, private sector manufacturers and consultants, and state government agencies. The Association was formed in 1983 by representatives of the transit industry committed to the advancement of public transportation in New York State. After over 20 years of operation, NYPTA remains devoted to public transportation development and representing the mass transportation needs of the riding public.
The Association consists of over 165 members, including public transit systems located throughout the state which collectively provide over two billion transit rides on bus and rail annually. Total passenger miles statewide equal nearly a half billion. These Association members consist of upstate and downstate systems in rural, suburban, city and large metropolitan localities, and account for 28% of all transit rides in the country. NYPTA serves as a clearinghouse of information for its members. The Association sponsors informative seminars and conferences, and publishes periodic updates and newsletters on timely industry issues. The Association encourages professional development through peer interaction and shared knowledge and experience. Members serve on a number of committees where they work together to solve problems and plan Association activities. NYPTA also formulates and implements affirmative and defensive legislative lobbying strategies in the State Capitol, on behalf of its members. The Association’s government relations efforts include daily monitoring of state legislation, rules and regulations that may impact the public transit industry, hosting an annual Advocacy Day, and active lobbying by registered professionals to persuade legislators and policymakers of the needs of public transit systems. Year after year, the Association works to educate public officials about public transit’s role as a critical element of New York’s economic infrastructure. These government relations initiatives ensure the continued commitment of state and federal funds to operate, maintain and invest in capital improvements of new and existing transit systems, and promote safe, environmentally sound and efficient public transportation throughout the state. The New York Public Transportation Association works to improve the industry by using its most valuable resource — the knowledge and experience of its members. The Association’s statewide network and government relations effort is the most effective tool the public transportation industry has to develop creative and sound responses to industry-wide concerns. |
